LCWA Milestones

May 2006

The concept of an academy develops.

Summer 2006

Meet with college representatives.

Meet with economic development representatives.

September 2006

Meet with representatives from county's high schools to present the concept of an academy.

Fall 2006

Visit participating ISDs to present academy concept to school boards.

Visit economic development groups to present academy concept and discuss possibility of funding.

December 2006

First admissions night with Lee College and Lamar Institute of Technology offering courses is held.

January 2007

First spring semester begins with 5 courses being offered at Dayton High School two nights a week.

April 2007

Process begins to gain 501(3)c designation that will enable donors to contribute funds to The Academy.

One-day forklift certification offered.

May 2007

Employment Preparation Workshop provides job interviewing information.  Admissions night for fall 2007 is held. 

Summer 2007

Meetings continue with college partners to expand course offerings and include more high school partners.

Process moves forward to obtain 501(3)c designation.

Board of Directors is organized.

Fall 2007 

Four new courses are offered and courses are now being offered at four high schools.

November 2007

Board of Directors begins consideration of funding a full-time executive director.

December 2007

Lone Star / Kingwood organizes first pinning ceremony for LCWA students.

Admissions night is held for spring semester 2008.

January 2008

Spring semester begins with 214 students.

Fifth high school offers courses on Saturdays.

February 2008

One-day forklift certification offered.

March 2008

Board of directors forms exploratory committee to discuss details for full-time director.

April 2008

Job Fair provides opportunities for 78 students to meet with 13 employers to investigate employment opportunities.

Board of directors outlines timeline for finalizing details for executive director.

Designation of 501(3)c is complete. 

May 2008

Admissions night for fall semester is held.

LCWA is recognized by Texas Economic Development Council with   Best Practices Award.

LCWA representatives testify before House subcommittee for public education.

June 2008

Lawyers work on memo of understanding for school districts and for economic development groups that facilitates funding of executive director.

July 2008

School districts and economic development groups approve respective memo of understanding.

Fall 2008

Interview process is developed for full-time director.

January 2009

Applicants are interviewed for director's position.

February 2009

Board of directors gives final approval for full-time director.

March 2009

Full-time director begins promoting the work of LCWA.

 

April 2009

Board of directors expresses an interest in a marketing campaign titled "Invest in Liberty County" presented by the director.  The purpose is to raise funds through contributions from business, industry, and individuals.

May 2009

Admissions night is held at Tarkington High School.  Course offerings include 17 programs.  A record 240 participants complete the admissions process.
